Cyprus surpasses 40,000 solar installations

Demand soars for measurement compensation systems

Newsroom / CNA

The Electricity Authority of Cyprus has taken actions to reduce the waiting time for the inspection of photovoltaic systems after installation. In its announcement, it states that the inspection is conducted within three weeks in the Nicosia region and in less than three weeks in other areas. It further notes that approximately 40,000 photovoltaic systems have been installed so far, mainly for residential use.

Due to a rapid increase in applications, particularly for Measurement Compensation Photovoltaic systems, with approximately 2,000 applications per month, the EAC states that, in addition to the measures already taken, additional staff will be hired next month to support the management and processing of applications, aiming for a significant reduction in processing time and the issuance of Connection Terms.

According to the EAC, approximately 40,000 self-consumption photovoltaic systems with a total capacity of 215 MW have been installed so far, mainly for residential use. Additionally, 150 Photovoltaic Parks with a total capacity of 220 MW have been connected to the Competitive Electricity Market. The total capacity of installed photovoltaic, wind, and biomass systems amounts to 670 MW.

Furthermore, applications have been submitted for another 145 Photovoltaic Parks with a total capacity of 265 MW for grid connection. There have also been applications for Photovoltaic Parks exceeding 250 MW, which involve studies for the upgrade and expansion of the transmission network by the Cyprus Transmission System Operator.

The EAC notes that after the installation of each photovoltaic system, an application is submitted for inspection and connection to the electrical system, which is processed within 25 days. The inspection is conducted within three weeks from installation in the Nicosia region and in less than three weeks in other areas.

The EAC highlights that constructive meetings have been held with the Cyprus Scientific and Technical Chamber (ΕΤΕΚ) and the Professional Associations dealing with both photovoltaic system installations and other related components. Working groups have been formed with the aim of achieving further improvement in processes, communication, and overall matters related to the field of electrical installations, from the submission of applications to the EAC to the connection of components and photovoltaic systems to the EAC's Distribution Network, as stated in its announcement.
