Cyprus inaugurated its new Nicosia Air Traffic Control Centre in Kokkinotrimithia, a move officials say strengthens flight safety and the country’s role as a regional security hub.
President Nikos Christodoulides said the Centre enhances Cyprus’ credibility and ensures uninterrupted air traffic in the Eastern Mediterranean, even amid regional crises. “The Republic of Cyprus chooses, through actions rather than words, to be a source of stability and cooperation,” he said.
Equipped with advanced technology and staffed by highly trained personnel, the Centre meets the highest European and international safety standards and supports Cyprus’ participation in the Single European Sky initiative, contributing to the safety of millions of passengers.
Christodoulides talked about the strategic importance of the Nicosia Flight Information Region (FIR), which has been a sensitive issue in negotiations over the Cyprus problem. He noted that Cyprus has successfully handled tens of thousands of diverted flights during recent regional crises, demonstrating the reliability of its air services.
Minister of Transport Alexis Vafeades said the Centre modernizes the country’s air traffic infrastructure and confirms Cyprus’ role as a responsible partner in international aviation. He called the facility “a guarantee for the safety and efficiency of flights” and a demonstration of Cyprus’ active participation in the European aviation network.
