A 39-year-old driver who had been detained in connection with an assassination plot against Stavros Demosthenous was released after authorities verified his account of the events.
The man, a metalworker, had been considered a suspect because police believed his vehicle may have been involved in assisting the perpetrators’ escape. According to the police request, “my client’s vehicle followed the perpetrators’ motorcycle from the scene of the arson to the point where it was abandoned, and there was suspicion that my client picked up the perpetrators.”
His lawyer, Alekos Argyrou, speaking on the TV program Alpha Enimerosi, explained that the allegations were unfounded. “He was considered a suspect because, according to the content of the Police’s request, he was alleged to have assisted in the escape of the perpetrators of the murder,” Mr. Argyrou said.
Evidence confirmed that the driver was in the area for professional reasons, traveling along the road for his work at a construction site. “He was going back and forth because of his work and often used that particular road. This is confirmed by the civil engineer of the construction site, by other individuals, and also by surveillance cameras,” the lawyer added. He also noted that there was additional testimony and camera footage from nearby properties showing the driver stopping for coffee.
Addressing claims that his client had followed the suspects, Mr. Argyrou said, “During a break from work, [he] drove his car eastward, stopped for coffee and to take care of personal needs. At that moment, he saw the van on fire.”
Concluding, the lawyer remarked, “My client was at the wrong time, in the wrong place.”
