Authorities across Cyprus are stepping up safety measures and enforcement efforts ahead of Easter, as the long-standing tradition of lambratzies (Easter bonfires) continues to be observed under tighter regulation.
Deeply embedded in local culture, the lighting of bonfires on Holy Saturday symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness and marks the peak of Orthodox Easter celebrations. While municipalities remain committed to preserving the custom, this year’s approach places strong emphasis on public safety, order, and prevention of dangerous behavior.
In several municipalities, including those in the Paphos district, bonfires will only be permitted under strict conditions. Local authorities have made it clear that no bonfire may be lit without prior approval. Church committees must submit formal requests, and any authorization granted will come with specific limitations, including reduced quantities of wood and the selection of carefully designated locations to minimize risk and disruption during religious services.
Municipal crews have already been deployed in the lead-up to Holy Saturday, working to remove unauthorized materials such as piles of wood and tires, which are often collected in advance for large, uncontrolled fires. Officials stress that these efforts are aimed at preventing hazardous situations and ensuring that events unfold in an orderly manner.
Across communities, including areas with increased youth gatherings, such as Peyia and Kissonerga, additional precautions are being taken. Security personnel have been stationed in key locations, and a stronger presence is expected on Holy Saturday night, particularly in public squares and surrounding areas. Local leaders have also issued appeals to young people to act responsibly and avoid risky behavior that could lead to injuries during the festive period.
Elsewhere on the island, similar measures are being implemented. In some municipalities, a limited number of organized bonfires will take place under supervision, with authorities coordinating closely with fire services to ensure compliance with safety guidelines. The aim is to strike a balance between maintaining tradition and protecting communities from potential harm.
At the same time, police operations have intensified nationwide. Over recent days, officers have conducted increased patrols and inspections targeting the illegal use of firecrackers, unregulated bonfire preparations, and incidents of youth delinquency. These actions have continued throughout the day and into the night.
Police have responded to multiple reports of fires and firecracker use, seizing significant quantities of materials intended for bonfires, including wood and tires, often with the assistance of local authorities. In several cases, fire service crews were called in to handle potentially dangerous situations.
Checks carried out at known gathering spots have also led to the identification of minors involved in such activities, with parents being contacted to take responsibility for their children. In one incident in Nicosia, a 21-year-old man was arrested after police discovered a small quantity of a substance resembling cocaine in his possession, along with firecrackers found near his motorcycle. Authorities are also investigating additional offences, including traffic violations.
Further seizures of firecrackers and other items, including homemade explosives and even a knife, were reported in other districts.
Police have reaffirmed that they will maintain an increased presence across all districts, implementing targeted actions aimed at preventing dangerous conduct and ensuring the safety of the public.
Authorities and local leaders alike are urging citizens to cooperate fully with regulations and to celebrate responsibly. The shared goal, they emphasize, is to preserve a cherished cultural tradition while ensuring that it remains a safe, respectful, and unifying experience for all.
