Eddie Jordan, the charismatic former Formula 1 team owner and beloved BBC racing commentator, has passed away at the age of 76 after a battle with prostate cancer. His family confirmed that he died peacefully in Cape Town on March 20, 2025, with loved ones by his side.

“It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Eddie Jordan OBE, the ex-Formula 1 team owner, TV pundit, and entrepreneur,” his family said in a statement.

A true showman in the world of motorsport, Jordan was adored by fans for his vibrant personality and deep love for racing. Born in Dublin in 1948, he first made a name for himself as a driver in the 1970s before shifting gears to team ownership. In 1991, he founded Jordan Grand Prix, a team that punched above its weight in Formula 1, securing four race wins over 15 seasons before it was sold in 2005.

After leaving team management, Jordan brought his sharp insights and bold opinions to the world of sports broadcasting. He joined BBC Sport’s Grand Prix coverage in 2009, quickly becoming a fan favorite for his lively commentary and deep knowledge of the sport. When the BBC withdrew from F1 coverage, he continued his punditry with Channel 4, further cementing his status as one of the most engaging voices in racing.

Beyond motorsport, Jordan had a passion for rugby and was a co-owner of London Irish Rugby Club, where he remained actively involved until his final days.

“Eddie and Jordan Grand Prix were known for their rock and roll image, bringing a fun and exciting element to F1, as well as consistently performing above their weight,” his family noted. “Even in his final days, he was thinking about the future, sharing his ambitions for London Irish Rugby Club on St. Patrick’s Day.”

Jordan’s legacy in Formula 1 and sports broadcasting will live on, remembered by fans and colleagues for his enthusiasm, humor, and unwavering love for competition.
