In an exciting development for motorsport fans, General Motors and Cadillac have reached an agreement in principle to enter Formula 1 as an 11th team starting in 2026. Partnering with Andretti Global, the team will initially use engines from an established manufacturer before working toward developing its own power units, targeting readiness by 2028.
The announcement comes as Formula 1 continues to expand its presence in the U.S., with outgoing Liberty Media CEO Greg Maffei expressing enthusiasm for GM’s entry. “Welcoming an iconic American brand like Cadillac to the grid will add significant value and interest to the sport,” Maffei said, praising GM’s progress in their bid to join the championship.
The Cadillac-branded team will build on the foundation laid by Andretti Global, whose Silverstone facilities are already gearing up for the 2026 season. The project has been ramping up, hiring experienced staff, including Formula 1 veteran Pat Symonds and former Alpine employees.
The team plans to source engines from manufacturers like Ferrari or Honda for the first two seasons, with GM working toward its own in-house engine by 2028. Although there were rumors of GM acquiring Renault’s engine intellectual property, the automaker has chosen to focus on developing its own cutting-edge technology for the sport.
The journey to this agreement hasn’t been without hurdles. Initial proposals from Andretti Global and GM faced resistance from Formula 1 executives, who felt the bid didn’t bring enough value to the sport. Tensions ran high, with even U.S. government involvement backing Andretti's cause.
A turning point came in September when Michael Andretti ceded control of Andretti Global to majority owner Dan Touris. This shift allowed for a more collaborative approach, which FIA President Mohamed Ben Sulayem fully endorsed.
For GM, entering Formula 1 represents an opportunity to showcase its technological expertise and strengthen its global brand. GM Chairman Mark Roos emphasized the challenge and prestige of competing at the highest level. “Formula 1 demands innovation and excellence, and we are committed to elevating the sport for fans worldwide,” he said.
With preparations underway at Andretti’s Silverstone base, the team aims to make a strong impression in 2026. This collaboration marks a significant step forward for Formula 1, bringing one of America’s biggest automotive names into the fold and further solidifying the championship's global appeal.
