In a significant move for environmental and agricultural sustainability, the European Commission put forth legislative proposals in June 2022 aimed at curbing the use of the most hazardous pesticides. The proposal outlines a bold plan to achieve a 50% reduction by 2030.
This crucial issue took center stage on Tuesday (22/11) during the European Parliament's plenary session in Strasbourg.
Addressing the assembly, EU Health and Food Safety Commissioner Stella Kyriakides emphasized the urgency of making immediate progress.
She stated, "We must protect the health of citizens and the environment, ensure food security, and simultaneously support our farmers in transitioning to sustainability."
Ms. Kyriakides expressed optimism, saying, "It is possible to reconcile the different views and reach an agreement."
The proposed measures underscore the EU's commitment to balancing agricultural needs with environmental and health concerns, signaling a proactive step toward a more sustainable future.
