In a significant move to address imbalances in staff representation, the European Parliament has launched a competition aimed specifically at Cypriot nationals. The competition, reference PE/AD/305/2024, is designed to recruit administrators at the AD6 grade, with applications closing on January 31, 2025, at 12:00 PM. This targeted recruitment effort seeks to build a diverse and geographically balanced workforce within the Parliament's Secretariat.
The European Parliament, with its headquarters in Brussels, Luxembourg, and Strasbourg, is committed to reflecting the cultural and linguistic diversity of the European Union. However, Cypriot nationals are currently underrepresented in its workforce. To address this imbalance, the Parliament is taking advantage of Article 27 of the Staff Regulations, which allows competitions to focus on candidates from member states with significant representation gaps.
This recruitment drive aims to bring on board 15 highly qualified candidates from Cyprus. While the initiative seeks to address underrepresentation, the Parliament emphasizes that all appointments will be based on merit, ensuring fairness and equal opportunity for every candidate.
Successful applicants will join the Secretariat as administrators, handling a wide array of responsibilities. These include providing advice and support to Members of the European Parliament (MEPs), preparing detailed reports and research to guide parliamentary decisions, managing staff and resources, overseeing interdepartmental projects, and ensuring compliance with regulatory developments in areas such as IT security and legal analysis. Public communication will also be a significant part of the role, with administrators responsible for drafting press releases, organizing public events, and raising awareness about parliamentary activities.
To be eligible for the competition, candidates must hold Cypriot nationality and enjoy full citizenship rights. They must also have completed university studies of at least three years, culminating in a degree officially recognized in an EU member state. At least two years of relevant professional experience in fields like law, communication, IT, or parliamentary work is required. Additionally, applicants must demonstrate proficiency in languages, with thorough knowledge of Greek and working knowledge of at least one other official EU language.
The selection process is thorough, consisting of pre-selection tests followed by advanced assessments. Candidates will first take an online multiple-choice questionnaire in Greek, covering topics such as European Parliament functions, verbal and numerical reasoning, and EU-related knowledge. Shortlisted candidates will then be invited to a second round, which includes a written drafting exercise and a comprehensive interview to assess their skills, motivation, and alignment with the Parliament’s values, such as teamwork, reliability, and a results-driven approach.
Successful candidates will be placed on a reserve list of suitable candidates, valid until 2028 with the possibility of extension. Recruits will be eligible to fill vacancies in the Parliament's offices in Brussels, Luxembourg, or Strasbourg. Starting salaries for the AD6 grade are competitive, beginning at €6,681.51 per month, exempt from national taxes but subject to EU deductions. Additional allowances may apply based on personal circumstances.
The European Parliament has reaffirmed its commitment to equality and diversity, encouraging applications from individuals of all genders, ethnic backgrounds, and abilities. By recruiting Cypriot nationals, the Parliament takes an important step towards ensuring the institution reflects the rich mosaic of cultures and identities that make up the European Union.
