Famagusta mayor Alexis Galanos passes away

Galanos campaigned for reconciliation and the return of the enclosed city of Varosha

Alexis Galanos, who served as the 7th President of the House of Representatives, between 1991-1996, passed away while on holidays in Greece.

Born in 1940 Galanos who studied at Cambridge was elected for five terms as a Member of Parliament, in 1976, 1981, 1985, 1991 and 1996.

Galanos was a founding member of DIKO. He eventually broke away from the party over disagreements with Spyros Kyprianou on the presidential race of 1998.

In 2006 Alexis Galanos was elected mayor of the fenced-off city of Famagusta and was subsequently reelected two more times with support from DISY.

Galanos campaigned for reconciliation and the return of the enclosed city of Varoshia.
