Former bomb suspect's bid to join Cyprus Police thwarted by past

Cyprus Police faces scrutiny: Ex-convict's recruitment challenge

Newsroom

In a surprising turn of events, the ambitions of an individual seeking to join the ranks of Cyprus's police and fire departments were abruptly halted due to a shadow from the past. What seemed like a fantastical scenario unfolded into the harsh reality of Cypriot law enforcement.

The story traces back over a decade, to December 2013, when the individual in question was handed a suspended prison sentence for charges stemming from an attempted destruction of property using explosives, alongside offenses of malicious damage and unauthorized transfer of explosives. Despite this history, the applicant resurfaced in 2019, endeavoring to pursue a career within the police force.

Following a series of rigorous examinations, the applicant managed to navigate the recruitment process successfully, seemingly poised to embark on a new chapter in law enforcement. However, it was in March 2021, during a routine audit by the Recruitment Board, that the shadow of the applicant's past surfaced.

Upon discovering the applicant's criminal record, which rendered them ineligible to possess a firearm, the Recruitment Board was compelled to exclude them from further consideration. Despite the setback, the individual pursued legal recourse, challenging their rejection on grounds of insufficient justification.

The saga culminated in a judicial review, with the Administrative Court weighing in on the matter. Ultimately, the court intervened, directing scrutiny towards the Police Recruitment Council, prompting a reevaluation of the procedures observed in this particular case.

While the outcome remains uncertain, the case serves as a stark reminder of the complexities entwined within the recruitment processes of law enforcement agencies, where past actions can cast long shadows over future aspirations.
