From dial tones to digital: Historic phone booths reimagined as time capsules

Reviving historic phone booths as ''time capsules'' in Agros

Newsroom

A new initiative has breathed life into a classic symbol of communication history. The first of 28 traditional phone booths has been transformed into a "Time Capsule" in the heart of Agros, blending cultural heritage with modern technology to create an engaging experience for visitors.

During the unveiling on Thursday, February 13, attendees—including officials, media representatives, tourism authorities, and project partners—witnessed this innovative approach to preserving the past while embracing the future.

The "Time Capsule" serves as a cultural landmark, offering a bilingual historical showcase inside the booth. Through illustrated materials and a QR code system, visitors can explore the evolution of telecommunications in Cyprus, accessing multimedia content that delves deeper into the role of these booths over time. Where feasible, solar energy powers the booth’s interior lighting, reinforcing a commitment to sustainability.

Speaking at the event, Ms. Maria Tsiakka Olympiou, Chair of Cyta’s Board of Directors, emphasized:
"This project is more than a tribute to history—it’s a step toward community growth, enriching tourism experiences while strengthening human connections through technology. The 'Time Capsule' in Agros is a bridge between the past and the future, encouraging future generations to see technology as a force for progress."

Agros Community Leader Mr. Antonis Tsolakis welcomed the initiative, stating: "We are honored to host the first 'Time Capsule' phone booth. This outstanding project is not just a nod to our cultural roots but also an educational resource for younger generations.@
