The long-awaited Geneva talks on the Cyprus problem officially kicked off today at 12:10 PM local time with a meeting of the National Council under the leadership of President Nicos Christodoulides. The session marks the opening of the Informal Expanded Meeting, a critical step in addressing the ongoing issues surrounding the divided island.
The National Council’s meeting is attended by key political figures, including former President Nicos Anastasiades, along with leaders from major political parties. These include DISY’s Anita Demetriou, AKEL’s Stefanos Stefanou, DIKO’s Nicolas Papadopoulos, EDEK’s Marinos Sizopoulos, DPA’s Marios Karoyan, and Kyriakos Tsimillis from the Ecologists-Civic Cooperation Movement. Foreign Minister Konstantinos Kombos, Deputy Minister for European Affairs Marilena Raouna, negotiator Menelaos Menelaou, National Security Advisor Tasos Tzionis, and Attorney General George Savvidis are also in attendance.
The next major event on the agenda is a dinner hosted by UN Secretary General António Guterres at 8:00 PM Cyprus time. This informal dinner will bring together the delegations of all parties involved in the meeting, offering an opportunity for dialogue before the more formal discussions continue.
Following the dinner, President Christodoulides will convene another meeting of the National Council, where further discussions on the Cyprus issue are expected to take place. The outcome of these talks remains uncertain, but hopes are high that progress can be made in resolving one of Europe’s longest-standing disputes.
