A Greek Cypriot taxi driver was arrested yesterday in the occupied territories for "violating a restricted area of the first degree" and "human trafficking" after two women were found in the trunk of his vehicle. He had charged them 200 euros to illegally transport them to the occupied territories, according to reports from Turkish Cypriot media.
The reports state that the taxi driver, whose name was published, was brought to a "military court" yesterday. During the proceedings, a "police investigator" testified that the driver had illegally transported two Nepalese women to the occupied territories in the early hours of January 6, passing through a military area near the Ayios Dometios checkpoint.
The two women were arrested on January 8 while attempting to leave the illegal airport in Tympou. A transit check revealed that they had no registered "entry to the TRNC", as the pseudo-state refers to it. The Nepalese women were arrested and charged with illegal stay in the pseudo-state.
The taxi driver was arrested on January 11 at the Ayios Dometios roadblock. He reportedly confessed in court that he had taken the two women to the occupied territories in exchange for 200 euros. He expressed remorse, stating that he had made a grave mistake and would not repeat it.
He was sent to the "central prison," where he is expected to remain for no more than a month until his trial.
