The British High Commission in Cyprus hosted a lively reception at the British ambassador's residence on Wednesday evening to celebrate King Charles III's birthday. The event, attended by numerous guests, featured a nostalgic media theme highlighting notable British cultural milestones.

In a nod to history, the High Commission commemorated the centenary of the iconic red British payphone box, many of which were still present in Cyprus until recently. They also marked the BBC's 60th anniversary of broadcasting, with hosts dressed as beloved characters from BBC shows, including Sherlock Holmes, adding a whimsical touch to the evening.

One of the highlights of the event was the showcase of Hendrick's Gin, a celebrated Scottish export particularly popular in Cyprus. Guests enjoyed the unique flavors of the gin, enhancing the festive atmosphere.

Both the President of Cyprus, Nicos Christodoulides, and the British High Commissioner, Irfan Siddiq, delivered speeches, expressing mutual gratitude for the strong support and cooperation between the two nations. Siddiq highlighted the extensive military and humanitarian cooperation between the UK and Cyprus, emphasizing their joint efforts to address regional challenges. He also praised the success of Amalthea, a recent collaborative venture between Cyprus and Great Britain. "Amalthea's success is testament to the great collaboration between Cyprus and Great Britain," Siddiq noted in his speech.

Moreover, President Christodoulides also expressed his gratitude but highlighted the fact that Cyprus was still a divided country. He expressed hope for the future, stating, "My aim is to finally render Cyprus a normal, functional state."

Guests were treated to traditional British fare, including fish and chips, which proved to be a hit, though some regretted missing out on the popular dish.

Adding to the memorable ambiance, a band played jazzy and swing tunes, creating a delightful soundtrack that, combined with the evening breeze, helped everyone forget the scorching heat of the day.

All in all, the King's Birthday reception was a delightful evening, celebrating British culture and the enduring bonds between the UK and Cyprus.
