Legal expert Selami Kuran raised concerns over Israel's alleged military activities in Cyprus, suggesting they breach international agreements. In an interview with state television TRTHaber, Kuran claimed that since October 7, flights from a British military base in southern Cyprus have transported military equipment to Israel. He argued that potential maritime resource agreements between Cyprus and Israel could further serve Israel's military interests, asserting this would violate Cyprus' foundational agreements.
Kuran emphasized Turkey's role as a guarantor of Cyprus and its right to intervene in matters affecting the entire island. He criticized Israel's actions as contrary to international law, noting the involvement of Greece and Britain as fellow guarantors. According to Kuran, Turkey has historically exercised its international rights and could seek recourse through the UN Security Council or General Assembly if necessary.
The jurist warned that if diplomatic appeals are ignored by the Greek Cypriot administration, Turkey might consider taking actions to address what it views as illegal military use of Cypriot airports and ports. Kuran also hinted at potential implications for security if threats such as Hezbollah's alleged attacks on Greek Cypriot territory persist.
