Investigators search for answers after a family of five perishes in a devastating house fire

Newsroom

Authorities have released the names of the five family members who perished in a devastating house fire in Limassol early Saturday morning, as investigations continue into what sparked the deadly blaze.

The victims have been identified as Bassem Adeeb Gamil Takla, 35, originally from Egypt, his wife, Maria Georgiou, 33, from Limassol, and their three young children, aged 2, 3, and 7. The family was found lifeless inside their second-floor residence in the Agios Nikolaos area after firefighters battled the intense flames.

A post-mortem examination confirmed that all five died from soot inhalation. Further toxicology and lab tests are underway to determine the exact cause of death, officials said.

The fire department has traced the origin of the fire to the home’s kitchen and small living room area. However, due to the extensive destruction, the exact cause remains undetermined.

Investigators are examining whether an electrical fault, an unattended appliance, or another factor led to the blaze. Limassol CID, in cooperation with fire experts, continues to sift through the charred remains of the property in search of answers.

Neighbors told authorities they woke to the smell of smoke and the sound of sirens but were unable to assist as flames rapidly engulfed the upper floor of the house.

“This is a heartbreaking tragedy,” one local resident said. “They were a lovely family. No one can believe what has happened.”

Authorities have yet to confirm whether the family was awake at the time of the fire or if they were overcome by smoke while sleeping.

As the investigation progresses, officials urge the public to ensure smoke alarms are functioning in their homes and to be cautious with heating appliances, especially during the colder months.

A funeral for the family is expected to take place in the coming days.
