Man arrested for second assassination attempt on Trump

Sheriff describes the suspect as eerily calm with a detached demeanor

The man accused in the second assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, 58-year-old Ryan Wesley Routh, appeared disturbingly calm when apprehended by police, according to Martin County Sheriff William Snyder. In an interview with Fox News Digital, Snyder described Routh as having a "detached, flat face" and noted his lack of concern despite the presence of police and helicopters.

Routh had been seen brandishing an AK-47 near Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Fla., where Trump was golfing. Secret Service agents, who spotted Routh aiming a rifle through a fence, fired shots to deter him. Routh fled the scene in a black Nissan but was later arrested in Martin County.

Sheriff Snyder expressed shock at the incident, emphasizing its severity given that Trump was not even on a campaign event at the time. Routh was found with two backpacks, bullet-resistant ceramic plates, a GoPro camera, and the AK-47, all of which were recovered by authorities.

Snyder praised local law enforcement for their swift response and assured that efforts to protect Trump would be intensified. The Secret Service quickly escorted Trump back to the clubhouse in a golf cart after the incident. Trump, who had previously survived a shooting attempt in Butler, Pa., in July, assured his supporters via a fundraising email that he was "safe and well" following the attack.
