According to media reports, the suspect had his face covered and was armed with a knife when he went to rob a convenience in Meneou, Larnaca district, on Thursday.

Concerned citizens managed to thwart the attempt and chased the man away, who took refuge in the yard of a state public elementary school.

People who surrounded the suspect performed a citizen’s arrest until police arrived and placed the man into custody. No violence or injuries were reported at the time.

Police issued a statement on Facebook to clarify that the school was not a target or in any way associated with the incident.

“We want to make it clear that the 29-year-old did not target the school. He entered the premises while being chased, following a robbery attempt, and he was arrested promptly,” police wrote.
