Minister of Justice and Public Order Stephie Dracos met on Wednesday with Frontex Executive Director Fabrice Leggeri, discussing issues of mutual interest concerning border security, irregular migration trends and cross-border crime.
According to the first estimates published by FRONTEX, the agency responsible for the EU’s external borders, the number of migrants and asylum seekers that arrived in Cyprus grew in January 2022.
FRONTEX notes that in the first month of 2022 in Cyprus, there were 850 detections, 48% higher than last year.
The most represented nationalities were nationals of the Democratic Republic of Congo (Congo-Kinshasa), Syria and Nigeria.
Both Dracos and Leggeri affirmed their common approach in enhancing the protection of Cyprus’ external borders, which are essentially EU borders, through the support of Frontex members.
The Minister thanked Leggeri for his visit and for Frontex` overall support to Cyprus and appeared confident that their close cooperation will continue.
