Two more suspects were arrested Friday night in the Strovolos murder case, only hours after police found the murder weapon believed to have been used in the crime.
The 33-year-old man who was already in custody and cooperating with investigators, pointed out the exact location of the knife and named two others involved in the murder, his younger brother aged 23 and his 22-year-old girlfriend.
Police, who arrested the couple late Friday night, had found earlier the murder weapon and clothes believed to belong to 23-year-old. It is expected that the two new suspects will be remanded into custody.
The teenage son of the murdered couple has picked the 33-year-old suspect out of a police lineup
Reports suggest that at least the two men had been inside the residence during the murder, in what appears to have been, at least partly, a robbery. The 33-year-old suspect said he knew everything that happened but only up to a point.
Earlier on Friday, the teenager son of the murdered couple is believed to have given a fresh account of the events and later picked the 33-year-old suspect out of a police lineup.
The victims, 60-year-old teacher Yiorgos Hadjigeorgiou and his 59-year-old wife Dina Sergiou were found savagely stabbed to death multiple times in the bedroom of their own house one week ago in Strovolos, Nicosia.
The shocking crime and the many unknowns in the case, including conflicting information, were fueling a sense of insecurity in Cypriot society, with authorities keeping a tight lid on the case but also asking the public to trust the investigators.
The suspect says he knows the motives behind the double murder but it is not clear whether he has shared that information with police.
It is not known at this point if investigators are looking into any more suspects in the case.
