A Nicosia man was killed in a road accident in Evrychou on Friday when his vehicle collided with a truck, while another driver is under arrest in the hospital.

Police said 66-year-old Christakis Yiangou from Nicosia was driving his car westbound on the Nicosia-Troodos main road on Friday afternoon. Around 5pm, under circumstances still pending investigation, Yiangou’s car collided head on with a concrete mixer truck, which was driven by a 36-year-old man, also from Nicosia.

The collision, which was described by local media as very violent, took place near the local firehouse in Evrychou, Nicosia district. Police did not immediately share details of the accident, but unconfirmed reports said the car had entered the opposite lane and slammed into the truck.

Emergency responders who rushed to the scene pulled out Yiangou’s lifeless body from the wreckage, while the other driver, who was also wounded, was rushed to the Emergency Room at Nicosia General Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries.

The man was detained on an arrest warrant but it was not clear whether he is facing charges related to the circumstances of the accident.

Police told Knews the man is being guarded by a police officer at the hospital and it would be up to the accident investigators to determine if he should be further remanded or released.
