Roberta Metsola has been re-elected as President of the European Parliament for its 10th parliamentary term, securing 562 votes in the first round of voting.
Metsola, representing the European People's Party, initially assumed the presidency in January 2022, following the death of former President David Maria Sassoli. She had then won with 458 votes, surpassing her competitors from the Left and the Greens.
In the recent election held on Tuesday, Metsola defeated her opponent from the Left, Irene Montero, who received 61 votes. Metsola's new term will last 2.5 years.
Out of 699 Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) who voted, there were 76 blank and invalid votes. An absolute majority of valid ballots, or 312 votes, was required to elect the President. Metsola's substantial tally of 562 votes ensured her decisive victory.
