South Korean President declares martial law amid political turmoil

Yoon Suk Yeol accuses opposition of pro-North Korean sympathies, vows to protect democratic order.

Newsroom

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declared an ''emergency martial law'' on Tuesday, accusing the opposition of undermining the government with what he described as pro-North Korean sympathies and anti-state activities. In a televised statement, Yoon pledged to eliminate such forces to safeguard the nation’s constitutional democracy.

The move comes amid mounting political tensions, with the opposition Democratic Party controlling parliament and blocking much of Yoon's agenda since he took office in 2022. The two sides have been at odds over next year’s budget bill, and Yoon has faced criticism for refusing independent investigations into controversies involving his wife and key aides.

While details on how martial law will impact South Korea’s democracy remain unclear, Yoon’s declaration has drawn sharp criticism from his political rivals. The opposition Democratic Party quickly convened an emergency meeting to address the situation.

Yoon’s approval ratings have dropped in recent months, reflecting dissatisfaction with his leadership as he struggles to navigate the country’s polarized political landscape.
