The Super Pink Moon, the biggest and brightest full moon of 2020, will reach peak brilliance in Cyprus skies just after 9pm on Tuesday night.
According to the head of the Cyprus Astronomical Society, Chrysanthos Fakas, the moon, which will be visible in Cyprus skies from early afternoon, will be reaching its closest point to the earth, just 357,000km away, becoming what has come to be known as a ‘supermoon’, appearing up to 30% brighter and 14% larger than normal.
The moon will be a perfect circle at 4.35am on Wednesday.
Fakas explained that the moon will not actually appear pink, as the April supermoon phenomenon was dubbed the Pink Moon by early Native Americans who linked the grand appearance of the moon with the pink Phlox subulata flowers that bloom in eastern North America in early spring.
