Around 13:20 on Thursday (01/06), the message control center of the Famagusta Police Directorate received information about a deceased diver in the Golden Coast marine area in Protaras.
Specifically, under circumstances currently under investigation by the police, Axel Schoeller, a 60-year-old Austrian resident of Paralimni, was found unconscious floating on the surface of the sea while diving with a friend at a distance of 1.4 nautical miles from the Golden Coast marine area.
Members of the Coast Guard immediately went to the scene, where they assisted in retrieving the 60-year-old to the shore. An ambulance was also called to the location, which transported the 60-year-old to Famagusta General Hospital, where his death was confirmed by the attending physician.
According to preliminary information, the 60-year-old went to the specified location for a search and rescue operation and is believed to have dived to a depth of 100 meters. There are no suspicions of criminal activity, and the body of the 60-year-old was examined, with no external injuries detected.
The official autopsy on the body of the 60-year-old is expected to be determined later in the day.
