Cyprus made headlines at Monday’s Gaza Summit in Egypt when President Nikos Christodoulides met with US President Donald Trump on the sidelines to discuss the ongoing Cyprus issue. During the meeting, Christodoulides presented a six-point plan focused on security, reconstruction, and humanitarian aid, underscoring Cyprus’ active role in regional peace initiatives.
Speaking to reporters while arriving at the Legal Service Academy’s annual conference, Christodoulides said Cyprus’ participation came despite some opposition at home. Both the US and Egyptian presidents personally extended invitations to the island nation.
“It was important for us to be very clear, just as we were in Paris last October when we first presented the 'Amaltheia' initiative,” he said. “Yesterday, we laid out a concrete plan with six initiatives in security, reconstruction, and humanitarian aid, aligned with President Trump’s 20-point plan.”
The plan is still being finalized and has already been shared with the European Commission, EU member states, the US, and other relevant parties. Christodoulides emphasized that the priority now is to implement the first stage of Trump’s plan before moving on to the next phase.
“As the EU member state in the region directly affected by these developments, and with strong ties to all our neighbors, it’s crucial that we do everything we can to ensure what was agreed is actually carried out,” he said.
When asked about the conversation with Trump, Christodoulides offered few details, confirming only that the Cyprus issue was the topic.
On the domestic front, the president also addressed a recent court case in which Simon Aikout, accused in matters related to the usurpation of Greek Cypriot properties, admitted to several charges.
“I don’t intervene in judicial matters, but his admission confirms the correctness of our policy, a policy that has faced criticism both from the occupation regime and from some within our own country,” Christodoulides said. “This proves our approach was right and should have been followed years ago.”
Christodoulides’ comments highlight Cyprus’ efforts to play a constructive role in regional peace while defending its national interests and property rights. The sideline meeting with Trump reinforced the island nation’s position on the Cyprus issue and showcased its proactive diplomatic approach in the region.
