In a bid to escalate pressure on Moscow on the second anniversary of its war in Ukraine, U.S. President Joe Biden unveiled a series of measures, including more than 500 new sanctions targeting Russia.
The sanctions aim to hold Russia accountable for its actions in the war and the imprisonment of opposition leader Alexei Navalny. Additionally, the U.S. will impose new export restrictions on nearly 100 entities supporting Russia and take action to further diminish Russia's energy revenues.
Biden emphasized the need for continued support to Ukraine, facing ammunition shortages and delayed U.S. military aid in Congress. The sanctions will cover individuals linked to Navalny's imprisonment, Russia's financial sector, defense industrial base, procurement networks, and sanctions evaders globally.
The move follows the invasion of Ukraine in 2022, with thousands of sanctions targeting Russia and its allies. Biden urged the House of Representatives to pass a bipartisan national security supplemental bill to aid Ukraine.
