A serious incident occurred on Sunday night (21/1) at the Ledra barricade, resulting in the injury of a police officer.

According to reports, a 40-year-old Greek Cypriot, wanting to cross into the free areas after having previously gone to the occupied territories, refused to give his details to the police, causing a disturbance.

In particular, the policeman asked the 40-year-old man for his identity card to verify his details and as a result, he reacted and attacked him.

Members of the Ledra St. station force rushed to the spot to enforce order with the 40-year-old continuing his offending behaviour.

The members of the police force managed to handcuff the 40-year-old where he after being charged, was discharged to be summoned before a court later.

He is reportedly being investigated for 14 offences including resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer.

It is noted that as a result of the attack on the police officer, he was injured in the chest and various parts of his body and was taken to the hospital while receiving medical treatment.
