Weather warning still in effect

Low barometer moving out but officials take no chances

The Fire Department says Thursday evening was uneventful in terms of weather after two days of heavy storms, while a yellow warning is still in effect until Friday evening.

Officials said a yellow warning remained in effect Friday through through 6pm, citing isolated heavy thunderstorms with rain intensity between 35 and 55 millimeters per hour. Chances of hailstorms are also expected in parts of the island, weather officials said.

Low barometric pressure is retreating by late afternoon, while Friday skies are expected to be partly cloudy and at times mostly cloudy. Chances of local showers and isolated storms remained, including possible hail during heavy thunderstorms, but officials said weather overall was expected to improve.

Earlier this week, serious flooding incidents and power outages were reported in Limassol, Nicosia, and Larnaca following heavy rain.

Vehicles including drivers in many cases were trapped and had to wait on fire fighters and emergency rescuers for help, while properties and crops were destroyed in many areas.

People took to social media to complain about water drainage, sharing photos of cars immersed in water that had “turned roads into rivers.”
