Nestled high in the Troodos mountains, Berengaria isn’t just any hotel; it’s a memory, a symbol, a touchstone of Cyprus’ history of luxury hospitality. Once hailed as “the most luxurious in Cyprus” when it first opened in 1931, this landmark is now on the path to a remarkable rebirth, blending nostalgia, high-end comfort, and the magic of the mountains.
At the heart of this revival is bbf:, the company driving the restoration with a meticulous respect for Berengaria’s original identity. “From the first moment we saw it, the hotel had a soul,” says Andronikos Spyrou, Senior Project Manager at bbf:. “Its architecture, its ties to the natural environment, and its place in the collective memory of Cyprus inspired us to take on its revival.”
Working hand-in-hand with Thanos Hotels & Resorts, whose CEO Thanos Michaelides brings decades of high-end hospitality experience, the goal is clear: honor the past while offering modern luxury experiences that today’s travelers crave.
Visitors can expect Berengaria to be reborn with facilities that marry comfort and elegance: a pioneering spa tucked beneath the outdoor pool, an indoor heated swimming pool, a fully equipped gym, sauna and steam rooms, rejuvenating “cold rooms,” and luxurious therapy areas. Dining and social spaces are being expanded, with airy, light-filled designs that respect the original structure while elevating the experience.
The natural beauty surrounding the hotel will remain front and center. The restoration minimizes disruption to trees and soil, integrates spaces with the existing landscape, and even adds special nesting areas for endemic birds. Guests will feel a seamless connection to the mountains from the moment they arrive.
Berengaria isn’t just about luxury; it’s about community. Spyrou points out that reopening the hotel will breathe new life into Prodromos and the wider Troodos region. Increased tourism will create jobs, support local businesses, and highlight the area’s natural and cultural treasures.
For Thanos Hotels, the project is a statement of philosophy. “Berengaria is a symbol,” Michaelides explains. “It’s a chance to show that Cyprus is more than beaches...it’s also mountains, culture, and authentic experiences year-round.” The hotel’s design will fuse earthy tones and natural materials with modern comforts, ensuring rooms converse with the surrounding landscape and offer a warm, intimate winter atmosphere. Award-winning chefs will craft dishes from local, seasonal ingredients, and the spa and wellness experiences will draw inspiration from the mountain environment.
Adventure and relaxation go hand in hand. At 1,400 meters above sea level, Berengaria offers cool summer escapes, snowy winter magic, hiking, mountaineering, bird-watching, visits to traditional villages, and immersive local experiences. “Travelers today are looking for authenticity and meaning,” Michaelides says. “Berengaria lets them live the mountains of Cyprus in a way that is both genuine and luxurious.”
The project is ambitious, with completion expected in 2029. Key milestones, including a seismic upgrade and full roof replacement, will be reached by mid-2026, laying the groundwork for full restoration.
Berengaria’s return isn’t just a hotel reopening; it’s the resurrection of a legend, a bridge between Cyprus’ golden past and a modern, experiential future. Come 2029, mountain luxury in Cyprus will have a new, iconic address once again.
