Colon cancer is rising in Cyprus

The need for early detection is crucial as colorectal cancer becomes 3rd most common in Cypriots

Newsroom

Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in both men and women in Cyprus, according to data from the Cyprus Association of Cancer Patients and Friends (PASYKAF). In 2020, 233 new cases were reported in men and 143 in women, highlighting the need for early detection and awareness.

PASYKAF emphasizes that up to 95% of cancer cases are linked to environmental factors and lifestyle choices. Symptoms of colorectal cancer include changes in bowel habits, persistent abdominal discomfort, blood in the stool, unexplained fatigue or weight loss, and frequent nausea or vomiting.

Individuals over 45 or those with risk factors like inflammatory bowel disease, a family history of colon cancer, or Type 2 diabetes are encouraged to consult their doctors for early screening. Smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, poor diet, and lack of exercise also increase the risk.

PASYKAF stresses the importance of regular screenings, especially for those over 50, recommending colonoscopies every five years. The Ministry of Health has launched a screening program for citizens aged 50-74 to detect colon cancer early, aiming to reduce the number of cases and improve survival rates.
