Cyprus claims gold and three bronze medals at ISF Gymnasiade in Bahrain

Marina Azinou leads the charge with a gold in judo, while athletics contribute three more medals on an impressive second day of competition.

Cyprus continues to excel at the International School Sports Federation (ISF) Gymnasiade held in Bahrain, with athletes clinching medals on the second day of competition. The Cypriot delegation has now won a total of one gold and three bronze medals.

The standout performances included Marina Azinou's gold medal in judo, along with bronze medals from Sarkis Andranik Astjian in the triple jump and Alexandros Gamraoui in the hammer throw.

Marina Azinou secured the gold medal in the -57kg category, showcasing exceptional skill and determination. The 17-year-old athlete dominated her matches without giving her opponents any chance, fulfilling her dream of standing atop the podium.

Meanwhile, Stefanos Lazaridis placed fifth in the -73kg category after a fierce battle for bronze, narrowly missing the podium.

On the track, Cyprus added two bronze medals to its tally. Sarkis Andranik Astjian earned his bronze in the triple jump with a leap of 15.03 meters, while Alexandros Gamraoui, who carried the Cypriot flag during the opening ceremony, secured third place in the hammer throw with a throw of 70.87 meters.

In the 800-meter final, Sorei Es Baba finished fourth, clocking in at 1:55.28 after a strong final sprint, while Kyprianos Liasis also placed fifth in the high jump with a clearance of 2.03 meters.

Marina Hatzikosta finished sixth in the shot put with a throw of 15.54 meters, and Markos Antoniades also finished sixth in the 400 meters.

In swimming, Alexis Iakovidis narrowly missed a medal in the 50-meter backstroke, finishing fifth with a time of 26.59 seconds, just one second behind the bronze medalists who shared the same time. His performance tied the national youth record and highlighted his promising potential among 63 competitors.

In the 200-meter butterfly, Ivan Kiselev finished with a time of 2:13.48, placing 17th out of 36 swimmers. The women’s 100-meter breaststroke saw Josephine Giovanis finish 19th with a time of 1:17.25, while Michaildimi Prokopiou was 28th with a time of 1:20.71.

In boxing, Spiros Veliou fought valiantly in the -57kg category but was defeated 3-2 in the quarter-finals by a Bahraini opponent, missing out on a medal.
