Letymbiotis emphasized that access to freedom of expression is fundamental right

The Russian government's recent decision to block access to more than 80 media outlets, including three based in Cyprus, starkly undermines democratic principles and the pluralism that supports them, according to a statement by Cypriot government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis.

In a written statement, Letymbiotis emphasized that access to free and independent information, freedom of opinion and expression, and the reception and transmission of information are not just individual rights, but fundamental pillars of democracy. "These freedoms serve as the foundation and the shield of democracy," he said.

The move by Moscow has drawn widespread condemnation from international observers, who view it as an attempt to stifle dissent and control the narrative within Russia. The affected Cypriot media outlets are among a diverse array of news organizations that have been critical of the Russian government’s policies.

Letympiotis reiterated Cyprus' commitment to defending press freedom and called on the international community to continue advocating for the rights of journalists and media outlets worldwide. He underscored that the free flow of information is essential for an informed citizenry and a functioning democracy.

The ban is part of a broader crackdown on independent media in Russia, which has seen increased censorship and restrictions on journalists, particularly those reporting on sensitive topics such as government corruption and opposition activities. The Cypriot government has expressed solidarity with the banned media outlets and urged for a concerted international response to protect press freedoms.

This development marks a significant escalation in the Russian government’s efforts to control media and limit public access to information, raising serious concerns about the future of press freedom in the country.
