Cyprus Deputy Minister of Immigration and International Protection Nicolas Ioannides stated today that the Green Line, which divides the island, should not become a migration route. Ioannides emphasized that Cyprus does not want the Green Line to function as a border for migrant flows.

In remarks following a visit to the Kofinou KYFADP and the "Lakes" Accommodation Centre, Ioannides addressed concerns about migrants in the buffer zone, saying Cyprus is engaged in dialogue with the United Nations Peacekeeping Force and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees to resolve the issue. He noted that the problem extends beyond the buffer zone to broader migration flows from Turkey and through occupied territories.

“Our policy is clear: we will not accept migration through the Green Line,” Ioannides said. “Having achieved zero maritime flows, we do not want to create a new route.” He reiterated that the goal is to prevent the Green Line from becoming a migration pathway and that efforts are ongoing to address both the immediate needs of migrants and the broader situation.

Asked about the future of the Green Line as a migration route, Ioannides assured that it is not intended to be used for this purpose. He emphasized that Cyprus is monitoring the situation closely and balancing humanitarian concerns with its policy against allowing migrant passage.

Regarding EU involvement, Ioannides stated that the European Union has not intervened and does not need to, as Cyprus is managing the situation without external pressure.

Ioannides also visited the Kofinou accommodation center, where he noted that conditions for asylum seekers are adequate, including air conditioning, food, and schooling for children. At the "Lakes" Accommodation Centre, a 1,000-bed facility with an additional 800-bed pre-removal center is under construction.

“These centers are temporary and designed to provide accommodation while asylum applications are processed,” Ioannides said. He described the pre-removal center as crucial for managing deportations.

The Deputy Minister highlighted that Cyprus is committed to meeting its international obligations while ensuring legal compliance. He noted that this year, returns of foreigners have exceeded new arrivals, reflecting the effectiveness of current measures.

In light of potential increases in migration due to regional instability, Ioannides assured that Cyprus has prepared national plans, including "Navratis," to handle possible surges in migrant flows. The Republic remains ready to implement these plans as needed.
