Five new coronavirus cases emerged in the Republic of Cyprus on Friday, when a total of 1,289 samples were checked for the virus.

According to an announcement by the Ministry of Health, three of the new cases involved contacts of other known cases. Two are contacts of positive cases from flights, while the third was located as a contact of a known case that had also been abroad recently.

The remaining two cases on Friday involved a repatriated person who was tested upon landing on the island, and another person who was recently repatriated but who had initially tested negative for the virus but who then developed symptoms and was re-checked, with the test coming back positive.

The five new cases brought total known cases in the Republic to 980.
