Elderly man in rural Nicosia succumbs to injuries after being struck by moving vehicle during brief stop

An elderly local man who was struck by his own vehicle during a brief stop, succumbed to his injuries hours later in the hospital.

Police said 81-year-old Andreas Theofanous was driving his vehicle along Vyzakia-Potami road in rural Nicosia on Monday afternoon, with his 78-year-old wife as a passenger.

According to police, the driver who was from Potami, was driving northbound when he stopped the vehicle around 3pm and got out.

After the driver got out, the car moved striking and seriously injuring him during his attempt to stop the vehicle

After Theofanous got out, the car moved with the driver being struck and seriously injured during his attempt to stop the vehicle.

An ambulance rushed Theofanous to the Emergency Room at Nicosia General Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries late at night around 10pm.

Police said the woman in the passenger seat was not injured during the incident while the full circumstances were still under investigation.

It was not fully established whether there was car trouble or another reason for the stop, but Knews has been told Morphou traffic authorities are investigating the incident in collaboration with Peristerona police station.
