Expect 41°C with heat alert in Cyprus

Weather alert: Blistering heatwave set to scorch the island

Newsroom

The Department of Meteorology has issued a yellow warning for extreme maximum temperatures on Thursday, with the mercury set to soar to a blistering 41 degrees Celsius.

The warning is in effect from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. local time.

Forecasters expect the heat to peak at 41 degrees Celsius in inland areas, while temperatures in the higher mountainous regions will reach around 33 degrees Celsius.

A seasonal low-pressure system is influencing the region.

For today, after the morning fog and low clouds dissipate, skies will turn mostly clear. By afternoon, increased cloudiness in the mountains may bring isolated showers. Winds will initially blow from the southeast to southwest at 3 Beaufort, shifting later to southwest to northwest at 3 to 4 Beaufort, with gusts up to 5 Beaufort along the south coast. The sea will be slightly rough. Temperatures will climb to 41 degrees Celsius inland, 32 degrees Celsius on the west coast, 34 degrees Celsius on other coastal areas, and 33 degrees Celsius in the higher mountains.

Tonight, the weather will remain mostly clear, though there may be occasional low clouds, mainly along the coast. Sparse fog and low cloud cover are expected to form in the early morning, particularly in the southeast. Winds will shift to northwest to northeast at 3 Beaufort, and the sea will be calm to slightly rough. Overnight temperatures will drop to around 25 degrees Celsius inland and on the south and east coasts, and around 24 degrees Celsius on the west and north coasts, as well as in the higher mountainous areas.

Friday will see mostly clear skies, with some cloud buildup in the afternoon. Temperatures will remain steady.

On Saturday, skies will be partly cloudy with the possibility of isolated showers or thunderstorms in the afternoon, particularly in the highlands and interior regions. Temperatures will decrease slightly, aligning with or just above average climatic values.

Sunday will bring mostly clear skies with no significant change in temperature expected.
