Extreme heat grips Cyprus

Temperatures soar to 44°C

Newsroom

A relentless heatwave continues to grip Cyprus, prompting an orange warning from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM on Friday. Temperatures are expected to soar to around 44 degrees Celsius in the interior regions, while the higher highlands will see temperatures around 32 degrees Celsius.

A mass of hot air is temporarily affecting the region, accompanied by sporadic light dust in the atmosphere. Today’s weather will be mostly clear and extremely warm. By midday and into the afternoon, localized cloud development may bring isolated rain showers, primarily in mountainous areas, but potentially affecting some inland locations as well. Winds will start as weak marine breezes at 3 Beaufort, gradually shifting to southwesterly to northwesterly directions, ranging from weak to moderate at 3 to 4 Beaufort, especially along windward coasts. The sea will remain generally calm to slightly turbulent.

Temperatures will peak at around 44 degrees Celsius in the interior, 38 degrees on the southern, eastern, and northern coasts, 34 degrees on the western coast, and around 32 degrees in the higher highlands.

Tonight will continue to be mostly clear and warm. Winds will blow mainly from the northwest to northeast, weak to moderate at 3 to 4 Beaufort. The sea will stay calm to slightly turbulent, with temporary turbulence expected in the west. Temperatures will drop to around 27 degrees Celsius in the interior, 25 degrees on the coasts, and 22 degrees in the higher mountains.

On Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, the weather will remain mostly clear initially, with clouds developing by midday, potentially bringing isolated rain showers and possibly an isolated storm, especially in mountainous areas and the interior. Temperatures will gradually decrease but remain above the seasonal average until Monday.
