A shocking discovery was made in Paphos when municipal workers, responding to a welfare case, found thousands of Cyprus pounds stuffed in garbage bags inside a home where a woman had been living in squalor. Alongside the money, pieces of jewelry were also uncovered.
The cleanup came after Paphos Mayor Phaedonas Phedonos publicly criticized the Welfare Office for failing to act sooner. He had been calling for intervention, urging authorities to take responsibility for the woman’s well-being. When welfare officials finally stepped in, the municipality moved quickly to assist.
In a social media post, Phedonos confirmed that after the money and valuables were found, the police were called in to collect, count, and document them. He also highlighted the appalling state of the home, saying that even experienced municipal workers were stunned by the conditions.
“They never thought they would see someone living like this in Cyprus,” he wrote.
This is the latest development in an ongoing case that has raised concerns about the effectiveness of social services in addressing extreme neglect. While the woman is now receiving assistance, questions remain about how her situation was allowed to deteriorate for so long before action was taken.
