Israel's shadow operations: A timeline of tactics

A history of Israel's secretive tactics amid rising tensions in the Middle East.

Israel is suspected of conducting various covert operations, including recent explosions of Hezbollah devices in Lebanon and cyberattacks on Iranian nuclear facilities. The Israeli military declined to comment on the explosions, but this incident is part of a long history of sophisticated operations attributed to Israel.

In April 2021, Iran accused Israel of a cyberattack on its Natanz nuclear facility, resulting in significant damage to centrifuges. While Israel did not confirm its involvement, media reports suggested a deliberate attack that caused a blackout.

In November 2020, Iranian nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh was assassinated by a remote-controlled machine gun while traveling in a convoy.

Additionally, the Stuxnet computer worm, discovered in 2010, is believed to have been developed by U.S. and Israeli intelligence to disrupt Iran's nuclear program, delivered via a thumb drive by an Iranian double agent.

Other notable operations include the assassination of Hamas operative Mahmoud al Mabhouh in 2010, the killing of Fatah activist Samih Malabi in 2000 with a booby-trapped phone, and the attempted assassination of Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal in 1997, which led to a diplomatic crisis.

Historical operations also feature the 1972 assassination of PLO representative Mahmoud Hamshari via a bomb planted under a telephone and the capture of Nazi official Adolf Eichmann by Mossad in 1960.

The recent incidents underscore the ongoing tensions and sophisticated tactics employed in the region.
