Several municipalities in Cyprus, including Nicosia, Strovolos, Aglantzia, Lakatamia, Ayios Dometios, and Egomi, have announced plans to expand and upgrade the local dog shelter. They have secured a plot of land adjacent to the current temporary shelter in Paleometocho, according to municipal officials.
The shelter, managed by the animal welfare organization Simba Animal Aid, serves as the sole municipal shelter in Cyprus. In a recent statement, municipal representatives revealed that they signed a contract with the Ministry of Interior to lease the plot for one year, with the option to renew.
Citing the increasing problem of stray dogs and the growing need for shelters, the municipalities have requested state land to establish a dog training area. They also plan to conduct maintenance and upgrades on existing infrastructure to improve conditions at the shelter.
The initiative reflects a concerted effort by local authorities to address the challenges posed by stray animals and enhance animal welfare in the region.
