"A 'strong European Health Union' will contribute to the building of strong, resilient, and sustainable health systems of tomorrow that will ensure better care for patients," said Commissioner Stella Kyriakides in her message for World Health Day.

She also stressed that "ensuring accessible, affordable, and high-quality medicines is a top priority for the coming year."

"Our reform of EU pharmaceutical legislation will address this critical issue by improving access to innovative and affordable medicines for patients, strengthening supply chain security to reduce the risk of medicine shortages, and supporting a globally leading and innovative EU pharmaceutical industry," added Kyriakides.

At the same time, the Commissioner for Health and Food Safety underlined the need to strengthen the resilience "of our healthcare systems to fully serve the needs of our citizens."

"This requires continuous and increased investment - in infrastructure, in healthcare professionals, and in research and development," concluded Kyriakides.

Stella Kyriakides is focused on the importance of an educated workforce in the healthcare sector, as well as collaboration with international partners.

"The challenges we face in the healthcare sector have made equal access to healthcare for all more critical than ever. On this World Health Day, we reiterate our commitment to making healthcare for all a global reality," concludes the European Commissioner.
