Tatar pushes two-state solution for Cyprus in London meetings

Turkish Cypriot leader calls for equal sovereignty, end to embargo ahead of New York talks

According to Kathimerini's Yiannis Ioannou, Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar has intensified his efforts to promote a two-state solution for Cyprus, emphasizing equal sovereignty for Turkish Cypriots and advocating for direct flights, trade, and diplomatic recognition of the self-declared Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). As part of his ongoing campaign, Tatar met with British MPs in London, including members of the British-Turkish Cypriot Friendship Group, where he reiterated his stance that Turkish Cypriots deserve equal rights and recognition as co-founders of the Republic of Cyprus, not as a minority. He also called for the lifting of what he termed the “absurd punishment” and embargo on Turkish Cypriots.

In an interview with Times Radio, Tatar emphasized the need for recognition of the TRNC and argued that Turkey's military intervention in Cyprus in 1974 was a legal right aimed at preventing the "extermination" of Turkish Cypriots. The interviewer compared the situation to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, warning that recognizing the TRNC could set a dangerous precedent.

Additionally, Tatar’s campaign will be bolstered by the upcoming release of a documentary by British journalist Abubakar Finin, who traveled to the TRNC to explore the issues of Turkish Cypriot isolation. Finin’s documentary, set to be released on September 13, is expected to present a narrative supporting the Turkish Cypriot leader's push for international recognition of the TRNC. Finin, known for his work on minority issues, has produced similar content on other unrecognized states like Somaliland.
