The Asprokremmos dam overflowed in the morning, according to Haris Kassioulis, District Engineer of the Paphos Water Development Department.

In his statements to KYPE, Mr. Kasioulis stated that in the early hours of Wednesday the Asprokremmos dam began to overflow, thanks to a large amount of rainfall that has hit Cyprus in recent weeks.  The Asprokremmos dam is the second largest in Cyprus and is home to the second-largest artificial lake with a capacity of 52.375 million cubic meters of water. The dam is built at an altitude of about 100 m above sea level and is located 16 km, east of the city of Pafos. Due to poor rainfall in recent years, it is a rare event that the dam overflows.

According to Mr. Kassioulis, the dam collects water from the Xeros river which is used for water supply and irrigation purposes in the low area of Paphos from the area of Kouklia to Pegeia.  It has overflowed eight times so far since it began operations in 1982.  The years the dam overflowed were in 1988, 1989, on January 29, 2004, on January 26, 2012, 2013, March 5, 2019, January 4, 2020, and this year February 9, 2022.

There has been an influx of people visiting Lake Asprokremmos in recent days despite the bad weather conditions.  The lake contains various species of fish and amateur fishing is allowed.
