The National Council will meet Monday at 11 a.m. at the Presidential Palace to strategize ahead of a critical trilateral meeting in New York, where Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, and Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar are set to discuss the island’s future on October 15.
Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis revealed that President Christodoulides will update the council on high-stakes meetings he held in New York during the UN General Assembly, including talks with the UN chief and key members of the Security Council.
With the October 15 talks approaching, the council will review diplomatic efforts and plan the next moves in what could be a pivotal moment for Cyprus’ reunification efforts.
Cyprus remains divided since Turkey’s 1974 invasion, with repeated rounds of peace negotiations yielding little progress. The last attempt, in 2017 at Crans-Montana, ended without a breakthrough. Now, all eyes are on the upcoming talks to see if they can move the needle on a decades-long stalemate.
