Two teenagers have been remanded in custody after they were arrested in rural Nicosia for transporting 9,980 fireworks in their vehicle.
A Nicosia judge ordered on Sunday that the two teenagers be remanded for five days in connection with a case of 30 kilos of piled explosive material deemed by police investigators as “high danger” pyrotechnics.
On Saturday night, traffic police stopped a vehicle in Klirou, rural Nicosia, which was driven by one of the 19-year-old suspects, while the other was a front seat passenger.
Police told Knews on Monday that officers flagged the vehicle during a traffic stop but did not say whether the incident was connected to a traffic violation.
While some types of fireworks are legal in the Republic of Cyprus, police said the two teens were in possession of a large quantity of illegal firecracker tube bombs.
The powerful firecrackers were confiscated by Klirou police officers while the case is under investigation.
