UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres raised serious concerns today over the potential annexation of the West Bank by Israel, calling it a "very serious violation of international law." His warning came in response to recent statements by senior Israeli officials who have openly discussed annexing parts of the West Bank in the near future.
During a UN Security Council meeting focused on the Middle East, Guterres expressed deep worry about the future of Palestinian territories, particularly Gaza and the West Bank. “I am deeply concerned about the existential threat to the integrity and cohesion of the occupied Palestinian territory of Gaza and the West Bank,” he said.
Guterres specifically highlighted the discussions among Israeli leaders about a possible formal annexation of all or parts of the West Bank, warning that such a move would have severe legal consequences. “Any such annexation would be a very serious violation of international law,” Guterres stated.
The issue of West Bank annexation has been a contentious topic for years, with support for it fluctuating among Israeli officials and political leaders. During his presidency, Donald Trump introduced a controversial plan that would have allowed Israel to annex nearly 30% of the West Bank, further intensifying tensions in the region. Trump’s support for Israeli settlement activity, along with his consideration of Mike Huckabee—an outspoken supporter of such settlements—as US ambassador to Israel, sparked excitement among annexation proponents.
However, Guterres emphasized his commitment to a two-state solution, envisioning Israel and Palestine coexisting peacefully and securely side by side. He called for “a collective effort” to help reunify Gaza and the West Bank on political, economic, social, and administrative levels, hoping for a more cohesive Palestinian territory.
On a more positive note, Guterres praised the ceasefire agreement that went into effect on Sunday in Gaza, calling it a "ray of hope." He urged all parties to honor the ceasefire and ensure that it leads to the release of all hostages and a permanent peace agreement.
The UN Secretary-General's comments underline the ongoing tension in the region, with international pressure mounting for a resolution that respects Palestinian rights while fostering peace and stability for all.
