Prodromos Prodromou, Minister of Education, Culture, Sports and Youth, and Lee Satterfield, Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, met on Thursday to discuss ways to strengthen relations between Cyprus and the United States as regards education, culture and sports. Their meeting was held at the Ministry of Education, in Nicosia.
In his statement after the meeting, Prodromou stated the topics of their discussion were the ‘’very good cooperation’’ between the two countries through the Fulbright programme, the training of teachers, the teaching of English in Cyprus, as well as people-to-people exchanges in university education and research, where relations between the USA and Cyprus ‘’are already very close’’. He added that the official opening ceremony of the American University of Beirut will take place on Friday.
On her part, Satterfield expressed her delight in finding ‘’ways to continue to strengthen the strong friendship between the United States and Cyprus through education and culture’’. She also said that "many opportunities to have creative programmes and people-to-people exchanges" were discussed during the meeting. ‘’I think that we can bring our shared values together through programmes that include a direct connection between our communities’’, concluded Satterfield, adding that she looks forward to a continued partnership.
