Newsroom
The process of renewing vehicle registration permits for the year 2025 starts in a few days via the Department of Road Transport's website. According to information from the Department of Transport, the renewal begins on January 7th and the last day will be Tuesday, March 11th, 2025 at 24:00, with the renewal period being for a period of three, six, nine and twelve months.
The surcharges
Traffic permits will be renewed until midnight on Tuesday 11.3.2025 without charge. For renewals made after Tuesday 11 March, the sum of EUR 10 and an amount equal to ten per cent (10%) of the registration fee corresponding to the amount due for the current year will be charged as a surcharge.
What supporting documents are required
To renew the registration licence, owners need to hold a certificate of fitness (MOT) and insurance.
Immobilisations and write-offs
As a reminder, those who had renewed their vehicle registration for the year 2024 but do not intend to renew it for the year 2025 must submit a notice of vehicle immobilization to the TOM. The immobilisation can also be done online on the TOM website [Road Transport Department (https://rtd.mcw.gov.cy)]. Otherwise, the obligation to pay the amount corresponding to the registration fee will still apply.
Vehicles for which the registration permit for the year 2024 has not been renewed and which have not been declared immobilised will be deleted from the TOM register if the amount due for the year 2024 is not paid and the registration permit for 2025 is renewed by midnight on Tuesday, March 11th, 2025.
In case of destruction of the vehicle, an application for cancellation of vehicle registration (form TOM 98A) accompanied by the "Certificate of Destruction" issued by licensed vehicle waste treatment facilities must be submitted to the TOM, in order to exempt the vehicle owner from the obligation to pay registration fees from the date of destruction of the vehicle.
Who is exempted from the renewal period
Registration permits can only be renewed throughout the year online. Exempted vehicles are those for which their owners will have to report to the Funds to pay their vehicle registration fees.
The following are exempted
(a) vehicles belonging to embassies
(b) private buses belonging to large families
(c) vehicles belonging to quarries
(d) old vehicles (antique vehicles) with a special licence (paying the amount of EUR 25)
(e) vehicles belonging to the United Nations
(f) vehicles belonging to other organisations with exemption code 04 (and not holding access codes to the Department's system)
As a reminder, vehicle owners must update their contact details, which are registered in the TOM register, in order to be able to receive information (e.g. information on recalls) concerning their vehicles.
