Newsroom

The Municipality of Nicosia is embarking on a transformative endeavor, announcing plans for an innovative environmental center nestled along the banks of the Pedieos River in Lakatamia. Set to materialize as part of the city's integrated development strategy, the project has garnered support from European Funds, signifying a milestone for sustainable progress in the Cypriot capital.

Embracing the ethos of sustainable development, conservation, and prudent resource management, the forthcoming environmental center aims to revitalize the area while championing ecological stewardship. With a state-of-the-art design, the center will boast a lecture hall, exhibition spaces, offices, and a cozy cafeteria, complemented by a lush botanical garden adorned with indigenous flora.

Scheduled to break ground in the summer of 2024, the initiative marks a significant step towards modernizing the region, enhancing public engagement, and fostering a deeper connection with nature. Notably, this initiative forms part of the broader vision for a linear park along the Pedieos riverbed, a transformative endeavor valued at 30 million euros.

Beyond the environmental center, the comprehensive strategy encompasses a suite of enhancements, including an intelligent monitoring system, renewable energy-powered lighting, expanded recreational facilities, and upgraded infrastructure. With the aim of promoting biodiversity, mitigating flooding risks, and enriching community life, the project signals a promising future for residents of Nicosia and beyond.

As the longest river in Cyprus, the Pedieos River symbolizes the vitality of the region, offering both solace and opportunity for sustainable development. With this ambitious undertaking, Nicosia is poised to emerge as a beacon of environmental stewardship and community resilience, setting a precedent for cities worldwide.
